Dogs; Large or Small?

Dogs; Large or Small?

These holidays, we are minding our neighbours dogs for a few weeks. Ruby is a cavalier king Charles spaniel, and Sadie is her half poodle love child. Although they are normally yappy little things, they must like the constant company they get here, and they hardly bark at all. Until it is time for them to go home and sleep in their normal beds, and then there is a long chorus of goodnight. As regular readers will know we have a much loved lady Labrador, Kora. She is a little quizzical of these guests but is very lady like and…

Cookbook Review, Interview and Giveaway!

Cookbook Review, Interview and Giveaway!

I was really excited when this cookbook landed on my desk for review, not only because I love cookbooks but because I love – LOVE – cookbooks that have a story behind them. I want to read about how the recipe came about, who the cooks where that created and built on this recipe, and who they cooked it for. This book has all of this in abundance! Tanya Bartolini’s grandparents and great grandparents emigrated from Italy to Australia to forge a better future for their children, and along the way the whole family have adapted traditional recipes to suit…

Raid Giveaway Winners Announced

Raid Giveaway Winners Announced

via The Raid Automatic Advanced Odourless Insect Control (aka insect disco door bitch) is still going strong in my kitchen, although it may have met it’s match when we parked a trailer load of  fresh horse manure just outside the door yesterday. I suppose it’s like hosting an all you can eat buffet but expecting the guests to stay at the buffet – you know they are going to get social and buzz around! The horse exhaust is now on the veggie garden and today I am off to layer straw over the top of it, and compost over that,…

Bug Free Summer + Giveaway

Bug Free Summer + Giveaway

You might remember I that I loved the effect that Raid Automatic Odourless Insect Control was having on our daily (and nightly!) insect disco. Well, there where a few points in particular that Raid wanted me to scrutinize, and here are my findings. Odourless Well, if you try really hard you can detect a faint smell, but mostly, yes! It is indeed odourless. So odourless in fact that unless you hear it’s faint sound, you wouldn’t notice it was there at all. The other night it was close to bedtime, the TV was off, and all was quiet and calm…

Bug Free Summer

Bug Free Summer

(This is a sponsored post, all words and enthusiasm are completely my own) Here is sunny Queensland, there are all manner of weird and wonderful insects, some I had never heard of until we moved from Sydney. Soon after we arrived, I was chatting to our lovely neighbour over the fence. Huh, she said in a matter of fact voice. There is a bright purple bull ant climbing up my leg. Oh, it’s just bitten me. I’d better go, I’ve got chills running up and down my leg. What a freakish ant, I thought, although I was impressed with my…

Chest of Drawers Makeover. It’s LOVE.

Chest of Drawers Makeover. It’s LOVE.

Do you remember this old chest of drawers? You can read the story of where I got them here. Spoiler: I bought them for $2 because I wanted to see what was in the drawers. Super Spoiler: Not much. BUT! We did get this awesome chest of drawers! And do you also remember my woefully inadequate DVD storage situation? I had a rant about it here.  The “DVD Storage” (let’s just put that in parentheses) occupied the spot underneath the TV, with a large, dark bookcase on either side. I love my bookcases and I cannot declutter any more books,…

Bedroom Dresser Makeover

Bedroom Dresser Makeover

This heirloom dresser belonged to Mr BC’s Nana. It’s a beautiful piece of furniture that we have enjoyed for a long time. It was bought as part of a set in 1942, that included all sorts of bedroom furniture and occasional tables. I’m not sure if it is fantastic quality, but we certainly love it. The finish was starting to wear off, and we had been discussing refinishing it, perhaps in french polish. It lived happily in the lounge room, and was home to plants, lamps…….. ……and this demonic lamp. It’s not really demonic, it is a beautiful and calming…

DIY Blog Planner

DIY Blog Planner

Do you use a blog planner? I’ve been planning my blog posts in a spreadsheet, and to be honest, it wasn’t working for me. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE spreadsheets, but I needed something versatile that would be in my face all the time. I could print my blog planner out, but then as posts changed around from day to day it would be scribbled on, and who want’s that mess on display? Not me.  Recently we completed part 2 of the office makeover, (more to come!) and during that process I unearthed this lovely picture I’d been hanging…

No, I haven’t been to the EKKA

No, I haven’t been to the EKKA

It’s EKKA Season in Brisbane, the time when the bush comes to the city in a show of jams, wood chopping and prize bulls. We have special Brisvegas holidays to cope – a day for each region of the city to ensure that everyone doesn’t go at once. It’s exciting, everyone goes. If you have, I am happy for you, and maybe a little jealous, for I have not. Growing up in Sydney I went to the Easter Show almost every year, and it was a wonderful thing – lots of people, animals, rides, interesting things to discover and look…

Hills Self Watering Garden Bed Review and Giveaway

Hills Self Watering Garden Bed Review and Giveaway

A little while ago, I was lucky enough to be sent one of the new Self Watering Garden Beds from Hills Industries, the same trustworthy people who have been drying your laundry for the past century or so. I’m a bit fussy about the garden, so I was super happy that trust wasn’t an issue. This garden bed is water tight. Imagine for a minute – you could have it inside on the carpet, and your carpet would be safe from leakage!  It comes in two generous sizes and I think it would be ideal to grow a small vegetable…
